How much should I pay for items at a garage sale to resell?
Pay no more than what is left after you take the item's recent sold price and subtract the marketplace fees, your shipping and supplies, and the profit you want. If the sticker is above that number, negotiate or walk away.
- recent sold price (plus any shipping the buyer pays)
- − marketplace fees
- − your shipping label and packaging
- − the profit you want for your time
On eBay, most categories charge a final value fee of 13.6% of the total sale amount (item price, shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500, plus $0.30 per order for orders of $10 or less and $0.40 for larger orders. Want the number for a specific find? The free eBay profit calculator does this math with each category's published rate and works out the most you can pay for the profit you want.
Step by step
- Find what it actually sold for. Search the exact item on eBay and turn on the Sold items filter (how to check eBay sold prices while thrifting). Ignore asking prices; they are only what sellers hope to get.
- Pick a realistic sold price. Compare listings in the same condition and completeness as your find, not the best one.
- Subtract fees. Use the platform's published fee schedule for your category.
- Subtract shipping and supplies. Weigh in the box, padding and the label you will actually pay for.
- Subtract your profit target. Pick a dollar amount that makes the trip, photos, listing and packing worth it to you.
- What is left is your maximum. At or below it, buy. Above it, make an offer or pass.
What is the most I should pay at a yard sale to make a profit on eBay?
Run the formula above with eBay's fees. An illustrative example (made-up numbers, not market data): an item that sells for $40, and the buyer pays $10 shipping.
- Total sale amount: $50 (ignoring sales tax here; eBay includes it, so the real fee is a little higher)
- eBay fee: 13.6% × $50 = $6.80, plus a $0.40 per-order fee = $7.20
- Your shipping label: $10 → left after fees and shipping: $32.80
- You want at least $20 profit → most to pay: about $12.80
Yard sale prices are usually negotiable, so knowing this number before you ask lets you make a confident offer instead of guessing. To try your own numbers, use the eBay profit calculator.
How do resellers decide what to pay at estate sales?
With the same back-from-sold-price math, done before you reach the checkout table. A few things matter more at estate sales:
- Shipping weighs more. Furniture, glassware, pottery and tools are heavy or fragile; price the real box and packing, or plan to sell locally.
- Identification decides the value. Check maker's marks, labels, signatures and condition up close; the same-looking piece can sell for very different prices depending on the maker.
- Read the sale terms. If it is an online estate auction, add any buyer's premium listed in its terms to your cost.
- Prices can change during the sale. If something is above your maximum, note it; many sales mark prices down on later days.
Rule of thumb for buying to resell at thrift stores
Set your minimum dollar profit per item before you walk in, check sold listings for each find, and buy only when the tag is at or below your maximum. Thrift-store tag prices are usually fixed, so the math gives you a clean yes or no.
- Use a dollar target, not just a percentage: fees scale with the price, but your time to photograph, list and ship does not.
- Check how often it sells, not only for how much. If few have sold compared with how many are listed, expect to wait longer for your money.
- Count the extras: cleaning, missing parts, batteries, and returns all come out of your profit.
Do the math from a photo
Honest Haul is an iPhone app, coming soon to the App Store, that does this math for you: snap a find and enter the tag price to get a low / typical / high resale range, profit after estimated fees and shipping, the most you should pay, and a Buy / Maybe / Pass call, with one tap to real eBay sold listings so you can check the numbers yourself.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay for items at a garage sale to resell?
Pay no more than what is left after you take the item's recent sold price and subtract marketplace fees, your shipping and supply costs, and the profit you want to make. If the asking price is above that number, negotiate or walk away.
What is the most I should pay at a yard sale to make a profit on eBay?
Start from recent eBay sold prices (not asking prices), then subtract eBay's fees, your shipping label and packaging, and your target profit. For most categories eBay charges a final value fee of 13.6% of the total sale amount (including shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500, plus a $0.30 per-order fee on orders of $10 or less or $0.40 on larger orders, according to eBay's selling fees page (checked 2026-10-07). Some categories use different rates.
How do resellers decide what to pay at estate sales?
The same way: work back from recent sold prices to a maximum price before you go. Estate items are often heavier, more fragile or harder to identify, so allow for bigger shipping costs and check maker's marks and condition carefully. If the sale is an online auction, add any buyer's premium in its terms to your cost.
What is a good rule of thumb for buying to resell at thrift stores?
Decide the minimum profit in dollars you need per item before you shop, check sold listings for each find, and only buy when the tag price is at or below your maximum. Because thrift-store tag prices are usually fixed, the math gives you a simple yes or no.
Should I use asking prices or sold prices?
Sold prices. An asking price is only what a seller hopes to get; a sold price is what a buyer actually paid. On eBay, turn on the Sold items filter in search to see completed sales.
